EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Background: Founded in 1955, Dogwood Arts is a nonprofit organization committed to a mission of promoting and celebrating our region’s art, culture and natural beauty. With a budget of more than $1.5M, it accomplishes that mission through initiatives that focus on arts programming in the community, arts advocacy and programs that nurture and support local and regional artists. Dogwood Arts is located in Knoxville, TN with an office in the historic Old City.

Position Available: Dogwood Arts seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Executive Director to advance the mission and agenda of the organization. Recognized as a cornerstone organization of the Knoxville community, Dogwood Arts produces more than a dozen annual, innovative programs and events to artists, educators, youth and the general public.

Responsibilities: The Executive Director of Dogwood Arts works closely with and reports to the board president and board of directors. The Executive Director directs and administers all programs, operations and policies in addition to managing a small professional staff.

Primary areas of responsibility include (but not limited to):

  • Strategic Planning – develops and implements the organization’s Strategic Plan and annual action plans in conjunction with the Board
  • Program Development and Management – develops, implements and supervises programs and services that are consistent with the organization’s mission and Strategic Plan and that meet the needs of constituents and stakeholders; oversee and ensure (with board review) all contracts are in the best interest of Dogwood Arts.
  • Fund Development/Grant Oversight and Fiscal Management – develops, grows and manages the fundraising and financial strategies of the organization; develops an annual budget for approval by the Board; oversees the management of all funds, consistent with the organization’s accounting system.
  • Staff Leadership and Management – motivates and develops the professional management team; hires, supervises and evaluates staff according to the organization’s policies and applicable laws; coordinates work with the board and program committees, volunteers and partner organizations.
  • Community Relations – develops effective and positive working relationships within the community (both within the arts community and elsewhere) to ensure that the arts are represented in the community-at-large and for those Dogwood Arts serves
  • Advocacy – serves as the chief spokesperson for Dogwood Arts in the community; articulates and communicates the value of the arts in improving our quality of life, and promotes community support of the arts and Dogwood Arts; conducts all business at the highest standard of integrity ensuring that all activities are legal and ethical.
  • Implementing Tools and Resources – Manage the development and maintenance of information systems that supports Dogwood Arts’ operations; ensure the staff has resources necessary to operate to the fullest potential and meet organizational goals.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Preferred college graduate with a minimum of five years management experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization, with significant experience in fundraising and business development; prior experience as President or Executive Director is preferred.
  • Master’s degree or certification in a relevant field is a plus
  • Knowledge of Dogwood Arts is a plus
  • Proven record as a successful fundraiser
  • Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong planning, organizational and analytical skills
  • Ability to positively motivate and develop staff, board and volunteers and build consensus
  • Visionary and innovative thinker
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all sectors of the community, the board of directors and staff

Compensation: Salary range, $75,000-$125,000 commensurate with experience.

Starting Date: As soon as able
