Kathie is expressing what has influenced her creativity for an entire lifetime… childhood memories of having her father and grandfather in the building trade, an ever-present attraction to things of God, and a high school art teacher that showed her she had a love for beauty and a variety of artistic abilities.
After graduating from The University of Tennessee in Art Education and Fine Arts, Kathie received early recognition for pastel works in the 1982 Dogwood Arts Festival. But it was 2009 when her artistic endeavors soar, setting her on course for a career as an oil painter.
“Landscape painting feels like a new-found love, but it’s actually an old love, rediscovered.”
Kathie resides with her husband and maintains a studio in north Knoxville. She travels and spends much time oil painting in the outdoors and participating in plein-air events. Her original works have sold internationally and are hanging in the finest galleries in the south.
Sycamore Row Statement:
“Everything in my life has brought me to this place.”
My husband and I had taken the day to paint the unmatched beauty of Cades Cove in our East Tennessee mountains. Halfway around the loop and after already having worked on two other canvases, some fluffy white weeds caught my eye. I turned and saw a line of Sycamores standing before the open cove… a sight clearly calling my name! Painting in the open air that evening felt like magic.
I brought the painting back the very next day for my painting group to critique, and a Park Ranger snapped a photo of me with it. It comes to no surprise that Sycamore Row has become special to me. For months I selfishly hung it in our home away from galleries so that it would NOT sell, because it had become a such great memory of that day.
I have been a part of this wonderful community for almost 40 years, and it is overwhelming to think that I was chosen to be in such an extraordinary company of artists that have come before me. But when the Dogwood Arts Festival came knocking, I felt a strong sense that I was saving this painting for the very purpose of being the 2014 Limited Edition Print.
There is something strange and mysterious that awakens within me as I open my easel and paint in the outdoors, as in Sycamore Row. Painting open air (Plein-Air it is called) is giving me an aliveness that I hope to believe is no coincidence. Everything in my life has brought me to this place.
