Thank you to our talented artists and Art Slam attendees! We spent an amazing evening in Strong Alley showcasing distinctive artworks that were created within a competitive format with challenging time constraints. Several artists received awards on Friday: Beth Meadows- First Place, Curtis Glover- Second Place, Jennifer Brickey- Third Place, and Lauren Lazarus- People’s Choice. We are so proud and thankful for every participating artist, as the artworks they created support Dogwood Art’s Art In Public Places downtown mural program.

Beth Meadows – First Place Winner

Beth Meadows is a mixed media artist living and working in Knoxville, Tennessee. She graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BFA in Studio Art in 2007. Her work is inspired by fashion, graphic, and architectural design mixed with outsider art. Meadows has been a part of over 100 art related events, such as First Friday exhibitions, in Knoxville and has helped found and direct two artist studio spaces near downtown- 17th Street Studios and The Salvage Shop Studios. She shows her artwork regionally and has collectors across the country.

Curtis Glover- Second Place Winner

Curtis has been painting large-scale murals in the Knoxville area for the last three years. From bars, restaurants, schools, city buildings and park walls, he has worked with numerous local business owners by visually interpreting their ideas on large walls. By catering to his clients’ needs in a multitude of different styles and unique projects, he stays very busy. Curtis does not plan to stop any time soon and hopes to intensify the public art movement in Knoxville which is slowly gaining traction.

Jennifer Brickey- Third Place Winner

Jennifer is painter and a professor of art, among many other things. She is both compelled by her busy life and repulsed by it. She is empowered by elements of feminism, history, and the suburban landscape. She resists conforming and responds mostly to honesty. She respects formalist conventions and technical integrity. She finds freedom in travel, space and multifaceted worlds of beauty, romance, structure, congestion and complexity. She likes lines, because they are honest, shapes because they are organic, space for its emptiness, and color for its vitality. She se perspective from history and deny certain superiority in art making.

Lauren Lazarus – People’s Choice

Knoxville-based artist, Lauren Lazarus, has churned out a wide variety of art in recent years, ranging anywhere from vibrant alcohol ink paintings to larger than life abstracts plastered on giant canvases. No matter the medium or size, she is passionate about her craft, always dreaming of new content or looking to nature or music to draw fresh inspiration for her next creation.
