2013 Market Square Art Fair Artist Application

The 53rd Annual Dogwood Arts Festival will be held during the entire month of April, 2013 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Dogwood Arts Festival is a non-profit organization with a mission to support arts education, to promote the visual and performing arts, and to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of our region. The Festival sponsors many activities and events to showcase the art, culture, and the natural beauty of East Tennessee. A featured event of the Festival, the annual Market Square Art Fair will be held April 12-14, 2013 in the heart of downtown Knoxville.

Market Square Art Fair is a popular outdoor event featuring fine art and fine craft, folk art, live music and dance performances, artist demonstrations, and hands-on activities for kids and adults in the heart of downtown Knoxville. The Fair is located on Market Square, along Market Street and Clinch Avenue, and in Krutch Park against a canvas of blossoming trees and outdoor sculpture. Attendance is estimated to be around 30,000 for this free event. The Fair receives significant advertising and editorial coverage throughout East Tennessee and the region.

The Market Square Art Fair is an outdoor event with the following open hours:
   Friday, April 12 - 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM
   Saturday, April 13 - 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM
   Sunday, April 14 - 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM

Exhibitor set-up will be Thursday, April 11

The Market Square Art Fair is a juried event. Accepted artists will be allocated a 10’ x 10’ space for their display. Each exhibitor must provide their own 10’x10’ white tent, with appropriate weights to withstand high wind conditions. Electricity will be provided only if requested on the contract application. Specifics of tent location and set-up will be provided after acceptance into the Fair. The booth fee is $300. Limited corner booths are available for an additional $50 and will be assigned on a first-come, first served basis.

If you do not have a 10’ X 10’ white tent, you may rent one from the Festival for $200.

2012-2013 CALENDAR

  • November 30, 2012 – Application, images, and $35 jury fee due
  • December 14, 2012 – Notifications/MSAF Contracts sent out
  • January 25, 2013 – Artists’ Signed Contracts and $300 booth fee due
  • April 11, 2013 – Exhibitor Set-up
  • April 12 – 14, 2013 – Dogwood Arts Festival Market Square Art Fair!

The Market Square Art Fair is open to all artists within the accepted media categories. Participation in any previous Dogwood Arts Festival event does not guarantee acceptance! By signing the application, the Artist agrees that he or she had direct, hands-on involvement with the creation and execution of each piece of work to be exhibited. Collaborating artists may show only their collaborative works – both names should appear on the application. (Collaboration here means artistic, not business collaboration).

  • Images submitted must be representative of the work to be shown.
  • Accepted artists must be present on site during the Market Square Art Fair open hours.
  • No work from commercial molds, kits, or manufactured work is accepted.
  • Reproductions of 2-D works must be labeled ‘REPRODUCTION’ – not print.
  • Ceramic works must be handmade by the Artist.
  • Photographic prints must have been processed by the Artist or processed under the Artist’s direct supervision.
  • T-shirts are not acceptable.
  • Jewelry must be crafted by the Artist; simple beading and assembly is not acceptable.
  • Exhibitors are prohibited from selling non-original promotional items (posters, t-shirts, calendars, etc).

In an attempt to foster an appreciation for and value of the arts for everyone, including those that cannot afford original work, we believe it is important to offer the public the chance to buy reproductions, hoping that they will move on to original work when possible. This transition is possible only if our patrons understand what they are buying.

Reproductions are an ancillary part of the display and should not exceed 40% of work shown. All reproductions must be clearly and individually labeled as such. No other terms such as ‘print’, ‘off set lithograph’ or ‘giclee’ may be used. Labels must say ‘Reproduction’, framed or unframed. No hand-colored reproductions will be considered ‘original’ works. Violation of the spirit, as well as the letter of the policy will be asked to remove their reproductions.

Image quality is very important. Applications will be reviewed by a jury of artists and Dogwood Arts Festival representatives. Along with the selected participants, a waiting list will be established in case of cancellation. Replacements will be made from the wait list at the discretion of the Festival. Acceptance information will not be given over the phone prior to written notifications.

Completed application, images, and the non-refundable application/jury fee of $35.00 is due by November 30, 2012. Notifications and contracts will be emailed to all applicants in mid-December 2012. Artists must submit the contract and $300 booth fee to the Festival office by January 25, 2013. Specific information about check-in, set-up and the Market Square Art Fair will be sent in early March 2013. Exhibitors cancelling after March 1, 2013 will forfeit all fees.

Images of participating artists and wait-listed artists become the property of the Dogwood Arts Festival and may be used for archival, publicity, website and confirmation purposes before, during, and after the Festival.

Participating Artists may only display work in the media categories in which they are accepted. The work must be comparable to that shown in submitted images. It is the Festival’s exclusive right and responsibility to remove work that is inconsistent or deviates from the style or quality of the submitted images, or is otherwise not in compliance with the rules. In any dispute over Festival policies, the decision of the Market Square Art Fair Committee shall prevail. Artists must be present on-site during open hours of the Fair. Assistants are permitted; however, they may not take the place of the artist at the Market Square Art Fair. Exhibitors may not ‘sublet’ their booth space to any non-collaborating artist.

The Market Square Art Fair goes on rain or shine, except in cases of extreme risk to public safety as determined by the Market Square Art Fair Committee. There is no refund of fees for bad weather.

Artists are eligible for several cash awards during the Market Square Art Fair including Best of Show, Artists Choice, and three Honorable Mention Awards. Booths will be evaluated Friday and awards will be announced on Saturday as soon as the judging is complete.
